Sony Mobile has announced its new flagship smartphone — Xperia 1 VII which will be available in Japan on June 5. Like the previous model, it will be available through three major carriers (DOCOMO, au, SoftBank) and as a SIM-free version from Sony.

But this time, there’s a big change in how people will buy it.

Carrier Versions Losing Ground

Recent traffic data shows that the popularity of carrier specific Xperia 1 series is declining. For example, au version’s market share has dropped to about one-third of what it was during the original Xperia 1 launch.

Meanwhile, the SIM-free (unlocked) versions — introduced officially from Xperia 1 II — have been gaining momentum. In fact, with the previous Xperia 1 VI, the SIM-free version even overtook the DOCOMO version in sales.
