WhatsApp’s New GIF Strategy
WhatsApp is preparing a major change for its users. The popular messaging app will soon replace Tenor with Klipy as its official GIF supplier. This update was discovered in the latest iOS beta version (26.2.10.70) through the TestFlight program, confirming that the feature is still in development but will roll out in upcoming versions.
Why the Change?
The reason behind this switch is simple: Tenor is shutting down its API service on June 30, 2026. The company has already stopped accepting new developer registrations, leaving platforms like WhatsApp with no choice but to find an alternative.
To ensure users can continue sharing GIFs seamlessly in chats, WhatsApp has chosen Klipy as the replacement. This means users will still be able to send GIFs as reactions or emojis without disruption.

Current Situation
At present, WhatsApp offers GIF searches from both Tenor and Klipy, depending on the user’s region. Once Tenor officially closes, WhatsApp will fully rely on Klipy for GIF searches worldwide. Interestingly, Giphy users will not be affected, as WhatsApp’s integration with Giphy remains unchanged.
Other Platforms Also Affected
WhatsApp is not alone in this transition. Other platforms that depend on Tenor, such as Discord, are also preparing to move to Klipy before Tenor shuts down. For WhatsApp, the migration is expected to be completed before July 1, 2026, ensuring a smooth experience for all users.
Expert View
According to tech blogger Sujit Ram, this move highlights WhatsApp’s commitment to user experience. “GIFs are an important part of online conversations. By switching to Klipy before Tenor shuts down, WhatsApp ensures that users won’t face interruptions in their daily chats,” he explains.
