With all the talent in-house, maybe they have a chat room equivalent up their sleeves — because Instagram is doing just that with its new test on the social front of the spectrum: You know, why message one-on-one with someone when you can open a group messaging union? This should enable more meaningful interactions between users by initiating conversations with others based on common interests.
The feature was first spotted by developer Alessandro Paluzzi, who noted that users could establish a Community Chat and manage its membership. Importantly, the size of these digital meeting places is limited, as each community can only host 250 members.
Unlike Instagram’s Broadcast Channel, which is more for content creators, Community Chat is a place where all users can engage with each other. Administrators in these chats will have the authority to remove messages or members, ensuring a moderated and respectful environment.
For now, the feature is still in the prototype stage and is unavailable for public testing, meaning the official launch date of the feature is still uncertain. The similarity between the new update and updates in Meta’s other applications — including WhatsApp and Facebook — also highlights how Meta, the parent company of Instagram, wants to knit the new features together and bring communities in its applications closer together.
Meta’s leader, Mark Zuckerberg, has vocalized that these features aim to make it easier for users to discover and connect with communities that fit their interests. The potential introduction of Community Chat on Instagram could significantly enhance user interaction, moving beyond traditional comments and private messages.
In the meantime, everyone seems to be a little too excited as Instagram is only testing it internally for now.
